This panoramic photograph of San Francisco was taken by Christopher Gjevre. Featured in the foreground is the famous Golden Gate Bridge, which connects San Francisco to Sausalito. Its name is in reference to the name of the strait, the Golden Gate, forming the entrance to San Francisco from the Pacific Ocean. The bridge was opened to vehicular traffic on May 28, 1937, with over 2 billion vehicles crossing to date. In the background is downtown San Francisco with the San Francisco - Oakland Bay Bridge. Centered in the downtown area is the world famous Transamerica Pyramid Center. Further left is the former federal prison located on Alcatraz Island, commonly referred to as “The Rock.”
