Sure you don't actually sleep directly on your mattress pad, but it's still under you, so if it's made of cotton you'll be less likely to sweat in the night. This XL Twin mattress pad has a cotton top exterior and a polyester fill. Most retailers only offer a cheap, fully polyester dorm mattress pad! And with polyester you may find that due to the less breathable nature of polyester material that you get hotter than you normally would if you had a cotton exterior mattress pad.
